They had it more when they were broken up than since they've been back together. ![]() There's something missing from their relationship: it used to be like sharp and sexy and some of that was the drama, but it was also their personalities and how they played off of each other, and I very rarely see that angle of things coming out any more. He needed to be rescued by her because he got too drunk. He has no life or personality outside of her, but his life with her is him just being disrespected by everyone including her to an extent, and it's played as a joke. He talks his way in and out of situations on top of getting into trouble, but that part of him is just kind of.gone? Honestly, most of his interesting plotlines in the past decade have been dropped completely in favor of him only caring about Rogue, so getting drunk because Rogue ditched him is one more in a long line of this same pattern. Like, if I had to off the top of my head pick a few words to describe his character in short, I'd probably say at the core of his character he's a charming scoundrel-type, but they've been very, very short on the charming for years now, when that's actually a big part of his personality. Since the end of All New X-Factor, I'd posit. Granted, it's just the first issue so that could change, but it's not just a one-off in that it represents a pattern of how Gambit has been treated in X-Men for a very long time. Rogue didn't even bother to send him a text that she couldn't make dinner? The whole vibe of their relationship feels off. His competence feels all the way down - his cards didn't even explode. Destiny is extremely dismissive outright rude towards him, and it feels like he's the butt of the joke, not that she's really being framed as wrong for that. He opens the issue basically in a drunk brawl for a reason that's not explained with Rogue showing up to save him/chide him. I mean, the framing of the story is very weird for him, from my perspective. If it's not, then it'll be bad but I'm not about to make that determination at issue #1. To me it's obviously being setup as a source of conflict that needs to be address in the series. He did not like it when Manifold laughed at him. His wife was way late and didn't communicate that to him (implied to not be the first time) so he got angry and drunk. the plot? The man knows this is happening and doesn't like it. Maybe the issue isn't that the story is treating him as a joke, but that the other characters aren't giving him the respect he deserves, which is definitely happening. He's also competent the entire fight, the point I made previously was him just being extra good.īut ok, but maybe I'm being to literal. In fact, it's the same point Manifold makes and it forces Destiny to change tactics. In the Destiny/Rogue/Gambit scene when he brings up issues with Destiny's request Rogue backs him and and says he made a good point. I'm genuinely intrigued by why my reading is so much different than other peoples'.
